ABOUT HOWARD HIGH SCHOOL AND THE CLASS OF 1972

Howard School has molded character and released compassionate and productive citizens into society for many years.  The Howard High School Class of 1972 produced scientists, teachers, chemists, engineers, authors, web design professionals, nurses, entrepreneurs, ministers, bus drivers, administrators, bankers, beauticians, realtors, musicians, . . . the list goes on and on.

Among the activities available to Howard School students were basketball (boys' and girls'), football, baseball, wrestling, cheerleading, marching and concert bands, concert choir, commercial cooking, tailoring, cosmetology, automotive mechanics, auto body repair, brick masonry, Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Vocational Office Education Club, History Club, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Club, William J. Davenport Honor Society, Clifford L. Hendrix Science Club, Future Homemakers of America, The Pacesetters, Audio-Visual Aids Club, Senior Council, and the Yearbook Staff.

In the Class of 1972, Jon Ivan Jackson and Patricia Carter were Mr. and Miss Howard.  Tommy Cunningham and Dorothy Davidson were Mr. and Miss Senior.  Kathy Weaver was the Homecoming Queen.  Regina Russell and Ouida Brooks were Valedictorian and Salutatorian.  Our class sponsor was history teacher Mrs. Ellen F. Williams.  Clifford L. Hendrix was our Principal, and John L. Pitts was our Associate Principal.  Mr. Oscar L. McDonald was our Vocational Coordinator, and Earmer Crutcher was the School Secretary.  The Fabulous Marching 100, and indeed the entire community, lost the incomparable Grady Black-the "gold-standard" of band directors-to another city.  Henry Bowles remained the faithful, long-time coach of the winning Howard Hustlin' Tigers basketball team.

Peruse the pages of our website and relive the "glory days" of the Howard High School Class of 1972.  We think you'll enjoy it.  E-mail our webmaster and let us know what you think.

*Chattanooga's Howard High School (now known as the Howard School of Academics and Technology) was Chattanooga's only historically Black city public school for many years.  The school is located at 2501 S. Market Street, Chattanooga, TN  37408.  Please support our school.

Go, HHS Hustlin' Tigers!
